What information we collect

Contact information

When you sign up for our newsletter, apply to host a node, or contact us, we collect your email address and any other information you choose to provide.

Website usage data

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how our website is used: which pages are visited, how long people stay, how they found us, and their approximate region (country or city, never a precise location). Google Analytics uses cookies and processes this data on our behalf. It does not store IP addresses. We also use Google Ads conversion tracking to see whether our non-profit search ads lead to sign-ups. Both only run if you accept analytics cookies. Technical data

Our servers automatically log technical information such as IP addresses, browser type, and device information. This data is used for security and to ensure the website functions correctly.

We do not collect sensitive personal data such as health information, political opinions, or biometric data.

We use your email address to send updates about Project SeaSense, respond to enquiries, and provide information you've requested. You can unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time.

Website forms

When you apply to host a node, send us an inquiry, or subscribe to updates, we store the details you enter together with the page you sent it from and your browser's user-agent string. This data is stored on Project SeaSense servers in the EU (Scaleway, Paris region) and is used only to respond to you and to run the project. We keep it for up to 24 months after our last contact, unless you become a device host, in which case we keep it for as long as you host. Email [email protected] to see, correct or delete your data.

Legal basis for processing

Under GDPR, we process your data based on:

• Consent — when you sign up for our newsletter, submit a form, or accept analytics cookies
• Legitimate interests — for website security, where our interests do not override your rights
• Legal obligations — when we are required to retain data by law

Who we share data with

We may share your data with:

• Service providers — such as our email platform and website hosting provider, who process data on our behalf under strict agreements
• Legal authorities — if required by law or to protect our rights

We never sell your personal information to third parties.

How long we keep your data

• Email subscribers — until you unsubscribe, plus a short period to process the request
• Website forms (host applications and inquiries) — up to 24 months after our last contact with you, or for as long as you host a SeaSense node
• Website analytics — Google Analytics keeps usage data for a maximum of 14 months; after that only aggregated reports remain
• Server logs — typically 90 days for security purposes

International data transfers

Some of our service providers may be located outside the European Economic Area. Where this is the case, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as Standard Contractual Clauses or adequacy decisions by the European Commission.

Your rights

Under GDPR, you have the right to:

• Access your personal data and receive a copy
• Rectify inaccurate or incomplete data
• Erase your data ("right to be forgotten")
• Restrict processing in certain circumstances
• Object to processing based on legitimate interests
